Stainless steel comprises more than fifty different alloy compositions, each developed by blending various elements to meet specific performance requirements. To simplify selection and application, these alloys are categorized using several classification systems, including the AISI numbering system, the Unified Numbering System (UNS), and their metallurgical structure. One of the most technical and function-driven classifications is based on metallurgical structure, which further divides stainless steels into categories such as ferritic, martensitic, austenitic, duplex, and precipitation-hardened types.
At European Special Alloys W.L.L., we offer Stainless Steel 405 plates, which fall under the ferritic category—a group characterized by straight-chromium compositions and magnetic properties. These plates are part of the 400-series stainless steels and are known for their excellent resistance to scaling and corrosion in mildly aggressive environments. Unlike some other grades, SS 405 is not hardened by heat treatment, making it particularly suitable for applications requiring high oxidation resistance and dimensional stability without the need for additional strengthening processes.
